Breast Care Center

Mammo MachineSHMC Breast Care Center is located at the lower grounds of the hospital and is open to all women. The center aims to provide a comprehensive, specialized and holistic care for individuals with breast diseases and breast health concerns. It offers unique services that include a multi-discipilinary approach such as breast surgery, radiology, pathology, reconstructive surgery, medical and radiation oncology. It includes diagnosis and treatment of both benign and malignant breast disorders as well as early detection and diagnosis with the advancements in technology.

It includes private consultations in a comfortable and welcoming clinic setting with a various informative reading materials made available to patients and families. There are scheduled or same-day procedures performed in the minor surgery suite or operating theatre and diagnostic procedures such as ultrasound, mammography and image-guided biopsies. Also, Screening and counseling for individuals who are at high risk of developing breast cancer are provided and Psychosocial support and counseling for both patients and families

In addition, the center also offers a new modality of surgery known as Vacuum assisted breast biopsy with the aid of EnCor machine. Through this way, scar from traditional excision may be avoided and it is minimally invasive compared to a usual breast surgery. Lastly, breast reconstruction is also being offered for patients who underwent mastectomy and wish to rebuild their breast.

Who should come to the breast center?

WOMEN WHO NEED ROUTINE SCREENING

All women, regardless of risk, should start having mammograms and clinical breast exams by age 40.

WOMEN AT HIGH RISK FOR BREAST CANCER

Factors that increase a women’s hereditary risk include having a personal and/or family history of breast cancer at an early age (under 45), ovarian cancer or other familial cancers. Non-hereditary risks include having no children, early menstruation, late menopause, and use of oral contraceptives. High risk women need to be followed closely on a regular basis.

WOMEN WITH ABNORMAL MAMMOGRAMS

Many of these abnormalities can be resolved or confirmed with additional tests such as ultrasound or biopsies. Physicians at the Breast Care Center can recommend the most appropriate diagnostic test.

WOMEN WITH BREAST LUMPS, DIMPLING, CHANGES IN THE SKIN OR NIPPLE, NIPPLE DISCHARGE, AND OTHER BREAST SYMPTOMS

Women with breast symptoms need careful evaluation by a breast surgeon and breast radiologist. They may need to undergo imaging studies such mammograms and ultrasounds, or breast biopsies. Some may just need reassurance from an expert in breast diseases
