This is what Sacred Heart Medical Center Cancer Institute believes and upholds to every cancer patient. Located at the lower ground of the hospital, it is a multidisciplinary institute which offers a holistic oncologic management that includes different specialties to assure optimum cancer treatment North of Manila.
Brief history of the Institute
The Sacred Heart Medical Center (SHMC) blessed and inaugurated the Cancer Institute on May 8, 2010. The Institute was conceptualized by Dr. Nenita S. Tan-Canlas, along with the Oncology specialist staff. It offers a multi-disciplinary cancer care from prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, up to follow up care.
The Institute consist mainly of a Chemo-ambulatory unit handled by the Medical Oncology team that offers an out-patient treatment for those patients requiring chemotherapy, and a Radiation Oncology facility with a Linear Accelerator machine equipped with 2D, 3D conformal and IMRT capabilities, as well as an ultrasound dedicated for Iodine seed implant brachytherapy for prostate. Other specialties that are part of the institute includes, ENT, Surgeons particularly for breast and colon, pain management and rehabilitation medicine.

Furthermore, An External Beam Radiation therapy using a state of the art Linear Accelerator machine is available to address the radiation needs of cancer patients from simple Conventional technique to 3-Dimensional Conformal and Intensity Modulated Radiation therapy.
Due to increasing needs for other cancer related services, the institute also offers Prostate Seed Implant Brachytherapy for patients with localized prostate cancer; Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) Unit for patients particularly with liver mass; A Therapeutic Nutrition Management to address the nutritional needs of our cancer patients adequately; a Hematology-Oncology Unit for blood related malignancies or as a consequence of cancer; and a Breast Care Clinic equipped with the latest instrument for breast conservation approach, dedicated ultrasound and biopsy procedures. It was designed for breast screening, early detection, diagnosis and treatment of both benign and malignant breast disorders.
Above all, the Institute is composed of trained, dedicated, caring and compassionate personnel composed of administrative staff, medical physicist, nursing staff, radiation technologist that assist the daily needs of our cancer patients from the time they enter our premises until the time they successfully completed their treatment, thus making sure that they would feel a part of the institutes’ family and not just a mere patient

WHAT IS RADIOTHERAPY
Radiotherapy is a local treatment for cancer. It uses high energy x-rays to destroy highly dividing cancer cells. Both normal and cancer cells are affected by radiation but normal cells are able to recover fast.
HOW MANY SESSIONS OF RADIOTHERAPY ARE GIVEN?
Radiotherapy is given daily monday to friday, lasting for 5 to 6 weeks on the average, depending on the type of cancer. No treatment is given during saturday and sundays to allow normal cells to recover.
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?
Side effects depend on the site being treated since radiotherapy is a localized form of treatment. Generally, the patient may experience tiredness, loss of appetite and skin reaction (sun burn).
